Welcome to How Low Will it Go? In this game we will try to predict the low point of a cars depreciation curve. Keep in mind we cannot predict inflation rates, therefore keep all predictions in 2015 dollars. Enjoy and good luck!
Today we will be looking at a Mercedes S-class Maybach 57 S. If you want the ultimate in luxury from the Germans look no further. This car is packed with more options and goodies than you can find in the Palace of Versailles. The 6.0 Liter V12 with 604hp and 738 lb-ft of torque engine found in the Maybach 57 S will power you to 155mph powerfully, regally, and with more class than a 150ft yacht. Currently averrable for an average around !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I ask you how low with the Maybach go? Some can already be found for under 70k. Like all luxury cars the Maybach has depreciated immensely from its original starting price of almost $400,000 greenbacks . I assume with the introduction of the new generation we will see the prices plummet even further.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Hint: Remember that Rolls Royce/Bentley has been around far longer so the rarity of the Maybach may allow it to hold its value slightly higher.

If Tavarish's articles are any indication, the bottom is a fiver.

I could see Tavarish posting about the Maybach in the foreseeable future.

"You can get a Maybach for the price of this used Daewoo Leganza!"

I wanna see like the Bentley Continental basement price right now. Can you find some?

39k on autotrader.

What about Cars.com? Autotrader has this thing of showing "preminum" ads for cars.

I'm gonna say $20k for a beater, $40k for a runner

I don't go to cars.com. Too many ads pop up.

S0 5% of its original value? Ouch

No joke, I'd assume a Maybach 57 with something like 50-100k miles on it getting as low as 30k near the end of the current S Class's model cycle. It'll be a LONG time before they start appreciating again.

I've seen them for under 70 already, so I'd guess under 40 in ten years.

I run google chrome with adblock plus. Trust me it helps.

It's not like anyone wants a Maybach anyway

It is a great way to pick up an interesting car for cheap.

Maybe you can sell the A8 and get one.

I don't like google. I really don't have a reason but I just don't.

I would at 20k

I second this. Hell, I might even take $5-10k off of both figures. Old Rollers and Bentleys go for chump change compared to their original value. As the OP pointed out, Maybach lacks the heritage of those two, although I suppose it will probably carry some cachet (or enmity) with people who remember that these were pretty much purpose built to be stupid expensive and consumed by the all–money–no–sense crowd.
![]() 02/18/2015 at 12:15 |

Right, that only leaves... $35k left to save up.

You use firefox? Cause they have the same thing man.

There's a Rolls Royce dealer not far from my house, and the few used models they do have are -/+ 3 years old and -/+$150k, all mint and indistinguishable from new. But they don't frickin' sell. Why? Because your average Rolls Royce buyer is rich enough to get anything he wants. Saving money isn't even on the radar. And since they're not even from a previous generation, they're not even close to being discountable or "classic".
![]() 02/18/2015 at 13:04 |

Yeah, for being so overbuilt a surprisingly small fraction of the price comes from the actual car itself. As the used market clearly demonstrates, most of the reason someone is willing to pay $400k for a car is the exclusivity, newness, and customization. You get none of that in the used market so they become ridiculous paper weights. Even the classics aren't worth much unless they're pre 1960s and/or absolutely minty. I posted a picture a while back of three old Rollers that a guy in my town has sitting outside of his garage.

It's not really the same situation as only having $15k to buy a car. Yes, you could get that Kia Rio or Toyota Yaris, but for the same coin you could get a near-new/last-gen car that's, ya know, NOT depressing, like a Honda Accord or a Chrysler 300. Things like running costs, reliability, and pricing matter just as much if not more than appearances.
When you're cross-shopping at $150k, you could either get a near-new Rolls Royce or buy a brand new fully optioned S-Class or 7 series and have thousands left over to buy a brand new Accord or 300. 2 really nice new cars, or 1 super duper YouTube pooper used one? I'll take the former, honestly.

I'm sure they'll be worth something in 30 years once all the Lord Goffeck Orsell of Withasporke's are dead and gone. Or the market will crash entirely when their kids sell off their parents' car collections all at once.
Should be entertaining, honestly (*sinister laugh*)

While I agree with you, I'm kind of confused as to why you brought this up.
![]() 02/18/2015 at 13:48 |

I was referring to how old old Pre-War Rollers are super-valuable and owned by rich old British men who parade them around Pebble Beach, and that the market may expand towards the '60s Rolls Royces as a new generation steps in, or the market will just collapse entirely.

I was talking about the other one ("It's not really the same situation as only…"). It's no big deal, I was just a bit confused as to what you were trying to address. Like I said though, it does make sense.

Ohhhh that one! It was meant to be added onto the first post about how they just can't sell the used models, but I hit post instead of enter :/
